This Very Living Room

The smudges on the window slow the sun just for a moment /

Stop me from staring too deeply beyond what the living room holds /

Toy cars on the cereal-adorned carpet / awaiting their mission /

and waving hello to the big ones outside /

I could see clearly out the windows last year /

When the floors were clean and your arms stayed in mine /

I could look close at the house down the road /

Where the robot keeps their lawn impeccable /

Where the porch is white and the flowers never die /

I could watch the leaves fall and be swiftly swept before the Earth had time to hug them /

Dear smudges, stay a while longer, for the world sweeps you up too /

One day I’ll wish to be sitting in this very living room.
